The Evolution of Our Vintage Tiny House

Our 1962 Shasta has undergone a handful of renovations over the last few years, including lots of sanding, painting, sanding again, and repainting… We’ve torn out cabinets, put down new floors, and have basically demo’d the kitchen twice. As our wants and needs on this Life Rustic journey have changed, our little house has changed and evolved right along with us.

When we first bought the Shasta, the interior was floor to ceiling birch paneling, and had quite a bit of damage from water leaks.

So for the first renovation of the tiny house on wheels, we ripped out and replaced damaged wood, got rid of the cushions, resealed the windows, door, and seams, sanded the paneling and painted it white, painted the furnace black, and replaced the faux-wood flooring.

We also replaced the kitchen countertops, added a tile backsplash, and installed a tin bucket sink.

A few tweaks and new faucet later, and I was starting to fall in love with the updated kitchen, even with the imperfect paint on the trim and other little flaws. They made our tiny house rustic and unique.

But the update was only temporary, because after discovering another problem area with the kitchen paneling, we found ourselves demoing the kitchen again — this time, even more extensively — removing the cabinets and replacing the entire back wall.

Unfortunately, the new kitchen shelf didn’t last very long… We hit one particularly hard bump on a rough road in Pike National Forest and the whole thing came crashing down. But in the end, that was alright, and we actually prefer the extra head room in the kitchen.

We also replaced the front door of our vintage Shasta with one that custom built from solid wood ourselves, and I’m pretty obsessed with it, actually…

I’m sure we’ll continue updating and demoing, changing things and painting others. In the meantime, though, I’m pretty pleased with our rough and rustic, vintage tiny house, and I hope our renovations have inspired you in your own projects — tiny or otherwise!
